A delightfully frothy comedy about a lonely European Princess traveling incognito and her romantic encounter with an American journalist, who at first is looking for  a story and then falls in love with her as she with him.  But  she returns to her duties.
It was  the first film she had to carry on her frail shoulders and she was capable not only of rising to the occasion, but gave  such a bewitching performance that she won an Oscar for Best Actress despite the stiff competition from Leslie Caron ( Lili), Maggie McNamara ( The Moon is Blue) and especially Ava Gardner (Mogambo) and Deborah Kerr ( From Here to Eternity).  The film was nominated for Bes Picture, Best Director and Eddie Albert got a nomination as  Best Supporting Actor. Edith Head  won the oscar for Best Costumes (Black and White) and Ian McLellan Hunter won for Writing (story).

Roman Holiday created also the Audrey Hepburn look. She was at ease  in a simple  skirt and blouse as well as in a royal gown and she had that  so called "gamine' look that would charcterize her following series of films, all successful romantic comedies.
In them, as in real life she was the quintessential  young girl who fell in love with older, mature men.
