Robin Hood is reunited with Marian 20 years after their first clinch. Thus Robin on his return to Sherwood Forest after a lengthy Crusade in the Holy Lands, has a grey beard, is less agile and tired of fighting. Marian, having  attempted suicide after Robin's abandonment of her for the Crusades, has become a nun. The love affair that is rekindled between the two of them was the most moving element in a plot that ended with Marian poisoning Robin to spare him suffering after he had been badly wounded in a duel with the Sheriff of Nottingham, and then taking the poison herself.
Despite the great cast, the film was far from a success both with critics and public.
It was the return to movies for Hepburn , but her career never took off again as before.
Her following films were few and far apart and a series of disappointments.
